N° 01 · Why we exist

We built trust at your table. Now we're earning it at their bowl.

In 2015, I met Mike Salguero. He had an idea that families deserved access to better protein and the peace of mind that comes from knowing it's raised the right way. That summer, we launched ButcherBox.

Over the next decade, we built relationships with those who shared our standards, delivering over one billion premium, humanely raised meals to American homes.

Then, I brought home Maisy.

I'd grown up with dogs — seven of them. But I'd never once been the person responsible for deciding what they eat. It was always someone else's call.

The first time that decision was mine, I felt the weight of it immediately. I took Maisy to the vet and asked what I should feed her. The advice was simple: stick with one of the big brands. Trust them.

But I'd spent a decade learning what "trust them" really means in the food industry. So I went home and did what I'd been trained to do — I dug in. I researched the fresh brands, the "premium" players, everyone claiming to be different.

What I found was everything I'd spent years fighting against at ButcherBox. "Human-grade" promises with nothing behind them. Antibiotics and added hormones. Vague sourcing with no transparency. Cooking processes that destroy the nutrition they claim to preserve.

Here I was, having spent a decade helping change how thousands of families eat, and I couldn't find food I trusted for Maisy.

So I built it. Not from scratch, but by applying everything that decade at ButcherBox taught me — sourcing standards, supplier relationships, nutritional rigor, and an obsession with knowing exactly what's in every bite and where it came from.

That moment — that weight of making a decision for someone who can't make it themselves — that's the moment DASH was built for.
